Biography
Holly Westacott. Aged 23. Born and working in the valley of South Wales, United Kingdom.
Holly is a BA graduate of The University of South Wales of Art Practice where she specialised in Ceramics.
Her work is focused on functional tableware with 2D tiles whilst experimenting how to blend them together through the medium of clay and a variety of glazes.
Statement
Holly finds inspiration from artists such as Betty Woodman, Daniel Spoerri for their mixture of 2D and 3D work - Spoerri's use of real objects and Woodman's painterly style. Holly finds a fine line between functional and concept within her projects as even though they might look like sculptures of fine art, she likes to surprise the viewer by being able to take away the bowl or plate, use it, and let it be put back. She likes to think when you look at her work you think it is sculptural artwork, then are pleasantly shocked when it becomes functional.
Technical Information
As an artist, Holly is drawn to the relationship between 2D and 3D objects. The tiles are created in earthenware clay and by using a slab roller and a tile cutter. The forms sitting on top are thrown and turned on a throwing wheel. The glazes used are vitreous slips, underglazes and earthenware low fire glazes to create the effect of 'food and drink' on the dinner table - creating the effect as though the dinner party has just abandoned.
